Surreal thing

Who Should Paint You: Salvador Dali
You're a complex, intense creature who displays many layers. There's no way a traditional portrait could ever capture you!

I don't know about you, but all that stuff about intense layers makes me think of an onion—which may be a fair point, since Turtle says I make her eyes water after I've been on a bike ride or out mowing the lawn. "Complex", on the other hand, is really just a polite euphemism for "difficult", and the reason no traditional portrait could ever capture me is that I tend to fidget.

However, I do like Dali's work. Or as Karl would say, "Ah do kindly like them pitchers he paints quite a bit. Mmm-hmm."

Interesting. Of course, the picture that came up was awful, but here's what mine said. I dunno if I necessarily agree.

"Larger than life, your personality overshadows everyone in the room
A painter would tend to portray you with a bit of added flair!"

Mine was, "Alfred Gockel." I have no idea who that is. Although you shouldn't be surprised. Evidently I think Picasso and DaVinci are the same person. Oy.

I'm Picasso!

I'll buy him a Guinness the next time I see him.

Turtle: I don't think shadow has anything to do with it. You light up a room.

Tink: Gockel's a new one on me, too. I don't think I'd ever confuse Picasso and DaVinci, but I will say that I only recently learned that he did a lot of work that wasn't in the cubist style.

Bill: I can't think of her name, just now, but there's a comedienne who used to do this bit (and may still) about how she wouldn't want to be painted by Picasso. "Look, I know my face isn't perfect," she'd say. "But at least it's symmetrical."

I think everyone forgets that Picasso's early works were actually more realistic life portraits. Ask Foo said, most people remember his for his later works where everything's askew. His early works were actually pretty good, IMHO. I remember studying him in my art classes. I personally favor Monet and more realistic art. This modern off-the-wall stuff just doesn't jive with my sense of art, but it's all subjective...like writing. Okay...now I'm just babbling. Gotta focus and get to work.

Like Turtle, I actually like Picasso's early line drawings of figures, and his sculptures. As for Dali painting your portrait, I picture your face draped over the side of a table or something. Could definitely be interesting.

I wonder what those limp... clocks were all about anyway? Do you suppose Dali's art would have been different had the little blue pill been available to him?

Mine was also Gockel.

I'd prefer Wassily Kandinsky myself.

PS. I was reading the comments at Badoozer's blog about Dyl and laughed so hard your comment made me shoot coffee out my nose. As long as Dyl isn't buying IKEA furniture and making soap, we are good, right?

by the way, Dali painted his dreams. I bet you there is also one of him naked at school in someone's private collection.

Mine was Andy Warhol.

Dali is by far my favorite artist. He was a total genious.

Emma: I'm embarrassed to admit that a) I don't know who Wassily Kandinsky is and b) I can't remember anything about Dyl except maybe about his future twin. I didn't know that about Dali painting his dreams, but it makes sense. Turtle has recently observed that all of my dreams seem to go wrong at the end, so I guess I'd need someone good at disaster movies to do mine.

Allez: I like a lot of Michael Parkes' stuff, as well. Kind of like a mash-up of Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt, and Frank Frazetta.

The lobster bisque? Haven't you seen Fight Club? I was sure you were referring to Brad Pitt.

Kandinsky is amazing. You have to google him. My favorite is this one or this one.

Emma: I saw Fight Club, but I don't recall anything about The Big Dyl (though that title sounds vaguely familiar...) or lobster bisque. I do know one thing, after following your provided links: Kandinsky isn't quite my cup of tea.

That first image durned near gave me a seizure!

Turtle: Pipe down, you. Remember that I'm also a big fan of M.C. Escher, and I think you'll find precious few nekkid anything in his work.

I like Michael Parkes too...I've been to 3 galleries that specialize in his work and his originals are fantastic in real life. But I wouldn't want him painting my portrait (for the reasons Turtle mentioned). ;-)
