That's right, I'm
stalling until I have something giggle-worthy to post. It's not like I don't
have anything to say, but I've been chastised in the past for sounding too serious or too bummed and, quite frankly, I'm just not in a real humorous frame of mind lately.
*I'm pretty certain that no one's interested in reading along as I vent my spleen about the current rioting over proposed immigration legislation, for instance. So to buy myself some time, I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring and take part in
Tink's meme:
I've never seen...
- Madagascar (the place, not the movie)
- My spleen
- Martha Stewart en deshabille (praise the Lord)
- Magenta wimples
I will never...
- Assimilate into mannered society
- Abandon my responsibilities
- Act my age
- Attempt to jump the Grand Canyon on a unicycle
I love the feel of...
- Skin
- Sleeping in
- Sheets fresh from the wash
- Singing really loudly in my car during my afternoon commute
I don't understand...
- Cantonese
- Cubicle life
- Cartesian dualism
- Current protests over immigration laws
I wish I could be...
- Friendlier
- Fitter
- Firmer in faith
- Friskier
* It's not that funny things haven't happened. There have been at least half a dozen moments when Turtle—who has become a big fan of Tink's blog—has turned to me and said, "You ought to write that up as a Tink & Hoop conversation." And I might, except that I could be sued for plagiarising Tink's style and... well... I can't remember the conversations for the length of time it would take to walk to the other end of the house and boot up my computer.

You ARE alive! I have to go back and read now.
What's going on with immigration? I hate the news for the most part and avoid it unless the weather is on and even it's never correct.
I hate the news because, in my opinion, it's just a glorfied gossip column. I'm quite particular about what I absorb in my older age.
So, immigration has got you goin' these days - are you for or against more restrictions? But... I just remembered you saying there is rioting? Over what?
Sometimes, I get so discouraged by human behavior - even my own. I wish I had the writing talent to express it sometimes because I believe it would relieve some of the emotional anguish.
Oops - I'm rambling. Sorry.
You totally rocked that Meme.
"My Spleen" Ahahaha! That's so gross.
"Act my age." Amen.
"Attempt to jump the Grand Canyon on a unicycle." That's right. You hire a stunt double to do it for you.
"Sheets fresh from the wash" Me too... And then five minutes later the dogs get into them.
"Friskier" I don't hear Turtle complaining. ;)
Don't ever keep us hanging that long for a post! You're thinking too much about WHAT you're writing. Don't. Just write. You're talented. It will carry you no matter the topic.
P.S. You have my complete support and permission to use the "Daily Hoop Conversation" idea.
Oh and... I could NEVER sue a friend. Unless you're obsenely rich. You haven't won the lotto lately have you? No? I didn't think so.
Anne: You don't want me to get started on illegal immigration. Believe me, I could on and on (and frequently do, to Turtle's considerable dismay). Putting aside all debate over the proposed legislation currently under discussion, I'd be happy as a pig in slop if They would just enforce the laws we already have. The thing that always gets me worked up is that so many of the folks who are up in arms about this have no interest in actually becoming Americans. They just want to sneak across the border, leech off our public services, and send their wages back home.
It's not like in the days of our ancestors, who came to this country, learned the language, and worked to become a part of it—not just feed off it and then roam the streets chanting and waving some other country's flag. Which, by the way, is a really stupid thing to be doing if you're someone who wants amnesty. All they're accomplishing right now is to alarm and piss off any citizens who might have been their advocates.
We should look to some of the European countries and the problems they're having with their non-assimilated immigrant populations and take note, because unless we pay attention, we're headed the same way.
Oops. I did it again.
Tink: I'm glad you liked the meme. Thanks for the kick start.
I really enjoyed the chance to use the words "spleen" and "wimple" in a post. And the thing about Sharon Stone... but that was somewhere else.
I appreciate your opinion and I feel exactly the same way. I'm always saying "Don't you have to know the english language in order to become a citizen?" Then I find out, "Oh, they're NOT citizens."
I know some people who have a rental house next door to them (not theirs). It started to fill up with immigrants. They would pile up stuff out in the back yard like left over drywall, lumber, etc. Then once a month they would all pile the stuff into their trucks and all of them and all of their stuff would head out of town for a week. Then they would come back and start over. The neighbors reported them and somehow the landlord got rid of them.
I'm with you - enforce the laws we already have.
Also, I'm ready to go back to the days when the lawmakers had real jobs and only "went to town" in order to vote on things and then went back to the farm. Our government would have A LOT more money if we didn't have to pay these yoyos for the rest of their life.
Okay, now I'M worked up.
Here! Here! Let's enforce the laws. The problem is that we were NOT enforcing them and now we're going to. Let's get off the pot and start doing something about it! Put up and shut up! They are not being polite about the courtesies we've extended thus far and are bitching about what we have given them. Take your belongings (what you came with when you first came and nothing more) and please leave.
(Turtle shuts up before going into a rant.)
Um... too late, hon.
I agree with turtle...if they are here illegally, they need to leave...
I don't mind immigrants, if they bother to try and learn the language and pay taxes (or at least go through the motions of Visas and such). We do need immigrants to do lower level jobs. Most Americans won't work that hard for that kind of pay.
Uh, have I just poked a hornet's nest? I'll be quiet now.
Debbie: I don't think you poked anything. You've essentially restated what I (and others) have been saying: come in legally, learn the language, become an American or a legal resident. That's what has made the United States great.
It's this business of coming in illegally, sending billions of dollars back to what they still consider their country, taking advantage of our education and medical systems—but wanting to live in their own little cultural bubble where you still act like they're in their home country—that's the problem.
